How do I use a tampon?

Follow these step-by-step directions for using a tampon. Tampons come in a range of sizes that relate to absorbency levels to suit menstrual flow. Start with the smaller sizes if you're using tampons for the first time, or try Libra Applicator Tampons.  Each pack of Libra Tampons comes with an instruction leaflet to follow.

Inserting a tampon:
 Before you insert a tampon it helps to know where it has to go. Place a mirror between your legs and have a look. Find your labia (the lips or folds of skin, which cover the entrance to your urinary opening and your vagina). This is where the tampon will go.
 Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using a tampon.
 Remove the wrapper and unwind the string.
 Hold the tampon at the string end and get in a comfortable position (e.g. stand with one foot on the toilet, edge of bath tub or squat).
 Relax your vagina. A tight vagina will resist the tampon. Take a deep breath, breathe out, and gently push the tampon in as your muscles relax, slanting it towards your lower back. Don't try to push it straight up. Gently ease it through the muscles of the vaginal opening and slide it into place.
 Insert the tampon to the full length of your finger with the string outside the body. There should be no pressure or discomfort.
 If there is, the tampon isn’t inserted properly, so relax and push the tampon in further at the same angle, or simply draw it out and start again with a fresh tampon. You can't feel a tampon when it's inserted properly. A tampon can never go in too far as the entrance to the uterus is too small for a tampon to pass through.
